What Happens during a Root Canal?
There’s not a lot of difference between the steps we take to fill a tooth and to perform a root canal.
The first step is to numb your mouth with a local anesthetic. Then, just as they do with a cavity, our dentists access the inside of your tooth and carefully remove the infected pulp—including nerves and blood vessels. The final step is to place a sterile filling inside the hollowed-out roots and then seal the tooth with a temporary filling.
After your root canal, you may notice some sensitivity or discomfort for a day or two. This is nothing to worry about, and taking over-the-counter pain medications like ibuprofen usually provides all the relief you need.
As always, don’t hesitate to call us if you have a question or concern. At Daylight Dental South Austin, we’re here for you before, during, and after your root canal.
We leave the tooth to heal for about two weeks, and you will return to our office so we can place a final restoration on the tooth. Because we need to remove tooth structure during a root canal, our dentists will likely recommend a durable material be placed on the tooth to protect it.

Root canal treatment is more comfortable and efficient than it’s ever been. Our caring dental team understands, however, that many patients can benefit from some additional relaxation.
For this reason, we offer gentle sedation with nitrous oxide or laughing gas. You’ll remain awake during your procedure and can drive yourself home afterward, but you’ll have very little memory of what happened afterward.
When you arrive for your appointment, please let us know if you would like sedation or if there is anything else we can do to keep you comfortable.
